LE SPIN OVALE featuring COCO ZHAO

Hamburg meets Nu Shanghai – Le spin Ovale meets Coco Zhao

Background

Since 20 years there has been an exchange program between Shanghai and Hamburg. There are strong connections in the areas of economy, sport, education and culture. The harbour city of Hamburg is described as "The Chinese Door to Germany". In 2006, on the occasion of the exchange program's 20 th anniversary, a musical project called "Come Together" was created. The result was an exquisitely creative CD production. The musical exchange takes place on a very high level between the musicians of Hamburg and Shanghai.
"Hamburg meets Nu Shanghai" is a project by the band "Le Spin Ovale" from Hamburg and the Shanghai jazz singer, Coco Zhao. The two halves of this project met through the internet and exchanged their music online. Later on they met to perform live together in concerts in Hamburg and Shanghai. Their performance is a combination of Coco Zhao's traditional Shanghai sound mixed with the electronic sounds of "Le Spin Ovale".

Concept

The music is an innovative mixture of Shanghai jazz and modern lounge-electro jazz from Germany. This mixture had never before been produced on a CD, neither presented live at a concert. The style attracts an urban target group within a wide age-range. The live performances are accompanied by little anecdotes from Coco describing his unique life in Shanghai. All this is accompanied by video installations from both cities.

Coco Zhao

Coco Zhao is one of the most sought after singers in China. Once a student of Composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Coco has since been immersed in the study of Chinese traditional music, western classical music and jazz. His music is a stunning blend of Chinese and western elements.
In 1997, Coco had the great honor of performing with the late, great jazz vocalist Betty Carter at her performance at the International Jazz Festival in Shanghai. He has been invited to perform at jazz festivals in Germany, France, Holland, Spain, England, Switzerland, Thailand, Malasia, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Also in 1997 he was invited by Parisian Radio station Europe One to appear in a jazz music program entitled "La Boite de Jazz". There, the local media dubbed him "The Boy Billy Holiday from China".
Recently Coco Zhao's band "Possicobilities" was the first Chinese band to be featured at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in June of 2006, where it received much acclaim from the world media and jazzists. The festival was attended by over 15,000 people.
Following the success of 2006, Coco went back to Canada in 2007 to perform at 11 jazz festivals countrywide, as well as the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C. in the USA.
